The gradual launch of service on existing frequencies by major mobile service providers in 2H11 should play a great role toward reforming Thai wireless telecommunications in this high-speed data communications era. service is also an important framework for diversifying information services, particularly online entertainment services allowing consumers to watch TV, listen to music or play games online.

In a survey conducted by KResearch on Bangkok residents’ opinions toward the use of 3G services in testing since 2009, Bangkok residents currently using 3G service totaled around 36.6 percent of the respondents. However, of those that have not used 3G services, some 89.6 percent stated that they plan to do so in the future.

Relatively high demand for 3G services, coupled with growth in the smart phone market will help expand non-voice services significantly. KResearch estimates that non-voice service revenue may reach THB3.3-3.5 billion in 2011, growing 27.0-34.6 percent, thus could reach 20.8 percent of overall mobile service revenue.

In the survey, most respondents responded positively toward using social networks, watching TV, receiving information and listening to music online, reflecting demand for new forms of communication that require high data transmission rates to transfer text, images, sound files and other media. Apparently, online entertainment services will be a popular form of non-voice services that will allow consumers to enjoy entertainment immediately after connecting to the Internet, wherein they will not have to save files on their mobile devices. –
